Caring for a Senior Dog in San Francisco: What Actually Helps
Senior dogs do not need less care — they need different care. After years of walking and boarding older dogs in the Excelsior and across southern San Francisco, a few things come up again and again.
Pick flatter routes
San Francisco is not a gentle city for stiff hips. On solo walks with senior dogs we plan around the hills: flatter blocks, shorter loops, and plenty of sniff breaks. A 30-minute walk at a slow pace is often better than an hour of pushing.
Watch the weather, not the clock
Fog and wind cut right through thin-coated and arthritic dogs. Cold, damp mornings are when stiffness shows up most. A light coat and a later start can change how a dog feels for the rest of the day.
Make the house work for them
- Pet stairs or a ramp for the couch and bed
- Rugs or runners over slick floors
- Water and bed on the same floor they spend the day on
- Nightlights, which help dogs with fading vision
Keep medications boringly consistent
Same times, same routine, written down. When we board or sit for a senior dog we ask for the schedule in writing and confirm every dose — no guessing.
Notice the small changes
Slowing on the stairs, hesitating at curbs, sleeping harder, drinking more. These are the things a regular walker catches because they see your dog on a normal Tuesday. Tell your vet early; most senior issues are much easier to manage when caught before they are obvious.
